“We Need to Tighten up the Language”

Following the Azerbaijani war of aggression, the Swiss ambassador to Armenia urged the Swiss government to make a clear statement. But Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis wanted nothing to do with it.

 

It was a traumatic experience for Armenia: 108 years after the genocide by the Turks, Azerbaijan launched a military operation in Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023 and expelled the Christian population to Armenia. Russia, Armenia’s former protecting power, has been massively weakened by the war in Ukraine and did not intervene. Azerbaijan’s closest ally, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (70), is all the stronger. Ankara and Baku have long seen themselves as “one nation with two states”.
