“Norway is doing much better than Switzerland when it comes to good offices”

Caucasus expert Günther Baechler warns of a new war of aggression by Azerbaijan. He accuses Ignazio Cassis and the Federal Council of neglecting the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Mr. Baechler, the world is following the wars in Ukraine and Gaza with horror. The conflict in the Caucasus, on the other hand, receives hardly any attention. You have just returned from there. What is the situation like?

The situation is very precarious. In the fall, over 100,000 Armenians were expelled from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia within four days, almost the entire population. Azerbaijan conquered the region militarily, supported by Turkey. This is now causing major humanitarian problems in Armenia. 100,000 refugees in a country with a population of less than three million is enormous.
